Further adventures with the voices from the Committee for Reciprocity and Care
A question persists Where is this going What are you going to do Will it become something Does it matter That kind of snag Keep going I say Share don't compare I cant imagine Don't want to imagine Where this goes Nor feel the need to hurry Despite the nag to hurry up What are you waiting for Where does that come from I am ignoring Luxuriating in the slowness The dwelling The dawdling The loitering In the world of the project Today is today What will we make will be revealed
Querido voces interiores,
Pausing for a bit of reflection, to spend time inside the material rather than succumbing to an invisible prod to make new material.
Let’s explore what it is, what’s working about it, how could it be different, what is it doing, etc?
Some writing about how it’s going, what this feels like to work in this way.
I’m impatient already, as it is. There erupts an excitement to see what a creation, a glimmer can become.
What if we don’t indulge it? Pause to simply acknowledge this feeling, this tendency.
What if we just sit here for awhile and let some of that anxious energy evaporate?

Could it be the rush forward is really motivated by a fear of being disappointed? If we just move fast enough we can hit escape velocity, leaving the orbit of planet NotGoodEnough. Fast enough to avoid the drag of the negative inner voices. What if we just sit with those voices.1
Get to know them/us?
Befriend them. Maybe after all this time it was all a big misunderstanding? They simple wanted us to stay awhile.
To share in the excitement of the new idea.
And so, hello, new friends, phantasmas, ghosts, inner voices.
We have this growing stack of collages and precedents. They’re inspirations and provocations. How might a communal heirloom be a stream, a documentary, an event, a song, a costume, a pipeline, a paver, a cistern, etc?
What kind of fun playground might those examples set out for us?
What helps you get outside of yourself, out of comfort zone, out of your own way?
These are the provocations we’ve made to demonstrate a balance of silly and serious, probably and possible, and mundane and magical. Imagine a deck of cards.
What might you do with them? Select one that resonates?
Pick one at random? Use it to transition from today, our priorities and hangups?
Use them as a warm up?
Pick at random. Consider it for a moment, what feelings arise. Then share with the group. Use as a way to introduce yourself.
“Hi, I’m Scott, I got Giant Tree Amble, it reminded me of the maple tree I climbed as a kid, the helicoptering seeds it dropped, the leaves, and also my vertigo as an adult. I love the idea of moving so slowly as tho we were going to live 200yrs or more. The world whirling round us, blurring. What might we see and notice then?”
I have used trends in this way. Presented as questions rather than truths. I see these thing showing up or already here but under the radar of many. It’s a warm-up and a way to find common ground.
A deck we flip through and discuss as a group? How have you seen something like this in your life? We go through as many as needed until the conversation initiates itself, the volleys find a rhythm back and forth, time for adjustments, revelations, or reservations.
If we spread them out, might they form some kind of terrain of possibilities?
A better way to remember the complexity of the creative brief?
Choose a category of heirloom, then consider a series of criteria…
That criteria is dense…
Might these examples help illustrate and make tangible those criteria?2

Uff, what was the criteria?
Iterate your ideas so they address at least one of these goals:
better, longer-lasting, ending obsolescence
needs no advertising
access not ownership
reduces waste
reduces dependence on a destructive industry
affords us to work less
reduces inequality
expands the commons
Mmm. There’s also this - Use these prompts to inspire your collages:
look to nature for solutions
create regional and regenerative food systems
be good neighbors to other species
build climate-smart infrastructure
deconstruct instead of demolish
consider Earth as a shareholder
collaborate across generations
recognize the rights of nature
take care of each other
Seems the cards work better as examples of this second list, no?
Yes.
Let’s re-organize the card deck to see how it lines up, if at all, with the list.

Hmm, a bit better. Now we have some more creative criteria for making the collages tomorrow. Still not obvious…
And we need to make some collages for the other categories: fauna, product, place, process.
We’ll consider those categories at least.
Maybe we should tag the cards with the relevant prompts from the list.
Let’s see tomorrow.
Thanks for being here. This daily thinking in public has been cathartic. To be clear, I don’t plan these out. I started writing this post this morning and the dialogue, the format, the topic, everything emerged as I wrote and now it’s 16:28h. I even captured some of the key turning points using the footnotes.
Abrazos,

This observation, this reflection, this change of point of view, happened as I was writing. I paused. I considered the opposite of what I was thinking and expressing. This exercise of considering the opposite came from The Creative Act book I read each night. And voila, look at what emerged!
At this moment, I paused to make lunch. I checked an email and read a brief interview. While cooking, I thought, oh today’s writing is my inner dialogue. Why not format it that way. Let’s see what it looks like.

What reciprocity and care are about is something wonderful called the neighborhood. It should dominate life. An elderly woman came into my office about sore hands.....easy-peasy...osteoarthirtis,,,take an anti inflammatory and go...NEXT.....yes...she says, but I have lost my music...I can't play my violin...So the postmistress said to me across the counter as she thrust her hand under my nose..."What's wrong with it?" I said, "I have dementia...." She said, "I don't care, what's wrong with it?" I said, "See Theresa the nurse practitioner...." She said, " Great Doc, I like her...thanks...".Neighborhood.
