Fwd’g a message from Orno, a story about his recent visit to a repair cafe. Very useful perspective given the hype around AI, what we choose to read, to follow, to share. It reminded us of the Cheat Sheets Orno created. It’s easy to forget these, but if we approach our daily lives with this simple caveat, of context, maybe we can right the ship?

Hi friends,
Remember those Cheat Sheet diagrams I sent over recently? Well, I was at a repair cafe the other day to debug my decoder. There were a some other neighbours there when I arrived. As you maybe know the repair cafe relies on the collaborative expertise of neighbours. A system of reciprocity - you give, you get.

I demo’d the decoder and shared a story about the swallows, which were swarming overhead. I gestured how they fly every year from sub-Saharan Africa to here AND they return to their previous homes! They prefer to fix up and repair their homes instead of building new ones. “A lesson for us,” I mused.
A neighbour leaned forward and asked us if we’d heard of this idea of ‘protocol communities’, an article they’d recently read. The idea wasn’t new, but more acute, “What's noteworthy is how fast some [communities] escalate, and why. MAHA is the clearest example: traveling from a loose constellation of health and epistemic-denial communities to setting national policy.1“
Another neighbour pondered, “Can we initiate different protocols, like the swallows repairing their stuff vs destroying stuff?”
Yet another neighbour grinned, “you know, there’s no AI, it’s an illusion.”
“What?”
“Yup, I saw this interview, Jaron Lanier suggested we think of AI as a massive collaboration of people. He had a funny cure for people who say they have a love affair with AI - to show them a photo of the team of engineers behind it.
[chuckling]
“He said, some think of AI as a blackbox, but AI is made of data from people. But people like the blackbox, as a God, and want to keep it shut. If we open the box, we see the people. So, let’s open the box.”
He went on to admit, “Bad actors are not going away and will try to keep the box shut. But who wants to live in a world where we’re told we’re worthless?”
“Like all the jobs being taken?” asks another.
“That’s people doing that,” interjects another.
“Yeah, he said if we acknowledge that AI is made of people, that AI doesn’t exist, then we can focus on people, incentivise creativity, create new things for what we can’t even imagine, or articulate.”
[thought nugget: You know, this repair cafe is like repair, in the existential way, no?]
Leaning back, “Final point,” hands on the table, “If we think of AI as we do now, AI will take it, absorb it. If we stop believing in AI, we can instead believe in a creative future of human collaboration.”
“ohhh…”
“I’m in…”
“I use it, but the hype is crazy…”
“AI is an illusion.”
“Tell everyone.”

What do you think? I thought the CRC community might like to hear this and share it around. We’ve created this designed world around us, we can undo some of it. Just need new narratives to follow. We could repurpose that last line from Smith’s article:
“You don't have to know what's true if you know what to do.2”

¿Te acuerdas de esos diagramas de «Cheat Sheet» que te envié hace poco? Pues bien, el otro día fui a un «repair café» para arreglar mi descodificador. Cuando llegué, ya había otros vecinos allí. Como quizá sepas, el «repair café» se basa en la experiencia colaborativa de los vecinos. Es un sistema de reciprocidad: das y recibes.

Hice una demostración del descodificador y conté una historia sobre las golondrinas, que revoloteaban en enjambre sobre nuestras cabezas. Hice un gesto para mostrar cómo vuelan cada año desde el África subsahariana hasta aquí ¡Y cómo regresan a sus antiguos hogares! Prefieren arreglar y reparar sus nidos en lugar de construir otros nuevos. «Una lección para nosotros», reflexioné.
Un vecino se inclinó hacia delante y nos preguntó si habíamos oído hablar de esta idea de las «comunidades de protocolo», un artículo que había leído recientemente. La idea no era nueva, pero sí más aguda: «Lo que llama la atención es la rapidez con la que algunas [comunidades] cobran importancia, y por qué. MAHA es el ejemplo más claro: ha pasado de ser una constelación difusa de comunidades centradas en la salud y la negación epistémica a marcar la política nacional».
Otro vecino reflexionó: «¿Podemos poner en marcha protocolos diferentes, como las golondrinas que reparan sus cosas en lugar de destruirlas?».
Otro vecino más sonrió: «Ya sabes, la IA no existe, es una ilusión».
«¿Qué?»
«Sí, vi una entrevista en la que Jaron Lanier sugería que pensáramos en la IA como una colaboración masiva de personas. Tenía un remedio divertido para quienes dicen estar enamorados de la IA: enseñarles una foto del equipo de ingenieros que hay detrás.
[risita]
«Dijo que algunos ven la IA como una caja negra, pero la IA está hecha de datos de personas. Sin embargo, a la gente le gusta la caja negra, como si fuera un dios, y quiere mantenerla cerrada. Si abrimos la caja, vemos a las personas. Así que, abramos la caja».
A continuación, admitió: «Los malhechores no van a desaparecer e intentarán mantener la caja cerrada. Pero, ¿quién quiere vivir en un mundo en el que nos digan que no valemos nada?»
«¿Como que nos están quitando todos los puestos de trabajo?», pregunta otro.
«Eso lo hacen las personas», interviene otro.
«Sí, dijo que si reconocemos que la IA está formada por personas, que la IA no existe, entonces podremos centrarnos en las personas, fomentar la creatividad, crear cosas nuevas que ni siquiera podemos imaginar o expresar».
[Reflexión: ¿Sabéis? Este «café de reparaciones» es como una reparación, en el sentido existencial, ¿no?]
Reclinándose hacia atrás, «Último punto», con las manos sobre la mesa: «Si pensamos en la IA como lo hacemos ahora, la IA se lo quedará, lo absorberá. Si dejamos de creer en la IA, podremos creer, en su lugar, en un futuro creativo de colaboración humana».
«Ohhh…»
«Me apunto…»
«Lo uso, pero todo este revuelo es una locura…»
«La IA es una ilusión».
«Contádselo a todo el mundo».
