Friends & neighbors,

Apologies for the rogue communiqué by Narrator last week. Not ok. It seems well-intentioned but poorly timed. Sometimes we suspect Narrator is not actually a person but some automated notetaker or depending on the glitch, something worse like a spyware parasitically thriving off our adblockers or security agents. We’re trying to be sovereign open-source so who knows what update snuck ‘em in.

Who calls themselves Narrator anyway? AI bots, thats who. Those fake friends, their profuse affirmations. That’s how they default tag our convos these days. They’re guessing based on our past interactions. Someone gets labeled as Narrator…or maybe someone spoofed us and changed their profile name to Narrator during a call and poof, it got recorded that way?

We design-depth folks are paired up with other depths or focuses. The Committee for Reciprocity and Care, CRC, this coop, our coop, operates as a worker-owned studio, the entire organization is the design team. People play to their strengths and decision-making power is equally spread.

A few folks noticed the hijack initiating a community sprint to provide some visuals to accompany the text-based cheat sheet. Maybe that’s what happened? Instead of shooting the cheat sheet around it went out on a public channel?

Long story long, here are some examples of visual companions for the cheat sheets.

Pedimos disculpas por el comunicado no autorizado de «Narrator» de la semana pasada. No está bien. Parece bienintencionado, pero inoportuno. A veces sospechamos que «Narrator» no es realmente una persona, sino algún sistema automatizado de toma de notas o, dependiendo del fallo técnico, algo peor, como un programa espía que se alimenta parasitariamente de nuestros bloqueadores de anuncios o agentes de seguridad. This iteration is made of concentric circles. Simple, but a bit abstract. The attempt to depict time in another way, inspired by the futures cone diagram, is maybe too much. The idea is that these concentric circles are oscillating and all of it orbiting through space. All of us, our atoms, are orbiting through the universe together.

El intento de representar el tiempo de otra manera, inspirado en el diagrama del cono del futuro, quizá sea excesivo. These two are more experiential. The first one, comes from some input from Orno, our new ornithologist friend. It’s a kind of first person perspective looking out through a series of layers. The concentric circles are gone and replaced by diaphanous zones layered and interchanging. Closer to us are the props, stories and locales. Beyond this are neighborhood, landscape, the world and time. The second visual is a street view. Like the first, but from a bystander’s perspective.

Here’s a closer look. We’re intrigued by these two. They capture the sensation of the messiness of our contemporary situation - the difficulty for our social fitness. How entangled are the ebbs and flows that influence, motivate, and condition what we perceive, feel, understand, interpret, express, hold or discard. In this visual, we’re with Orno, looking at the new decoder, a prop. It facilitates stories of a locale. This occurs in a neighborhood. However, all of this could sway in a multitude of directions influenced by the mental, cognitive, emotional landscape we hold, discard, follow, espouse. There is the world in which this transpires. The marking of that change, is time. Given so much of the world is designed by us, for ill or for good, and we exists and are part of a world constantly evolving, there exists a fluidity to anyone suggesting the inevitability of this or that.

Hello world, for the birds

Veámoslo más de cerca. Estas dos imágenes nos intrigan. Captan la sensación de desorden que caracteriza nuestra situación actual - la dificultad para nuestra adaptación social. Qué enredados están los vaivenes que influyen, motivan y condicionan lo que percibimos, sentimos, comprendemos, interpretamos, expresamos, conservamos o descartamos. Now if we step outside of ourselves and consider how this impacts our perception, interpretation of what we see, it’s clear how many signals there are flooding our receptors. How easy it is to get it wrong, or certainly not fully correct.

That’s Orno’s insight. What have the birds been trying to tell us? Or for that matter, what’s the world been trying to tell us? What are we ignoring, burying or falsely coating because its inconvenient, awkward, other, scary, new, or threatening? What do we invite? What do we give energy vs take? To what do we give attention and how?

Ahora bien, si nos distanciamos de nosotros mismos y reflexionamos sobre cómo esto influye en nuestra percepción y en nuestra interpretación de lo que vemos, queda claro la gran cantidad de señales que inundan nuestros receptores. Lo fácil que es equivocarse, o al menos no acertar del todo.

We still like this quote. We still want to add “in time” at the end. We could also alter the beginning to say something akin to “Always receive a thing, person, place or experience by considering…”. Hmm. That got a lot of upvotes. Let’s write it bigger to remember.

• Sillas Accesorio - numerosos formatos inspirar actividades relacionadas con el entorno local y la participación vecinal. Ejemplos: «Design Fictions», guías prácticas, actas de reuniones, notas de lecturas, manuales introductorios, «Weekly Trailheads» y fanzines. A quick guide to explain the divergent imaginaries flooding your inbox.

• Titles Story - FIELD REPORT, this newsletter, is a remote sensor, a subjective compass, a sensing device reporting on the “field of our existence, our social fitness”. Post titles are admittedly inconsistent but attempt to set a tone of exploration and emotion. The subtitles do a bit more statistical work. AC+DC = Active Commitment to Daily Creation. Following this is a simple counter - 142 as of June 25, 2026. Any additional copy describes the format, if unique or new.

• Chairs Prop - Numerous formats designed to inspire activities pertinent to the locale and neighbor engagement. Examples: Design Fictions, How-To’s, Meeting Minutes, Notes from Readings, Primers, Weekly Trailheads, and Zines. NOTE: Design Fictions are a recent addition…exploring different futures for Communal Heirlooms(see neighborhood). How you sit affects how you see.

• Locale - Activities designed to engage neighbors and the neighborhood in different circumstances. Examples: The live-streaming activity to create the Inspiration Hours Playbook: 40 activity ideas based on random drawing of a location and activity. More recently, the ongoing Inspiration Hours and Zine making activities with neighbors.

• Neighborhood - This level of context is full of real, historic, and fictional organizations and figures. (Why? See in Time.) Examples include: actual neighbors, Adventuring Ventures (real), Ajuntamiento (city hall, very real), Citizen Action Teams (ephemeral), Committee for Reciprocity and Care (becoming real day by day), ornithologists and other characters (tbd).

• Landscape - Tangible manifestations of a mental landscape, memory, or idea. Synonym: Field, thus the name FIELD REPORT. Examples: inspirational artists, designers and their works, existing examples of Communal Heirlooms.

• World - Visions of and alternatives. As depicted by writers, economists, futurists, ecologists and more. Examples: Optimist’s Telescope, Less is More, What If We Get it Right, Technofeudalism. All describe the polycrisis of climate degradation, authoritarianism, and toxic polarization.

• in Time - Occurring across generations. Examples: Communal Heirlooms (an invented ongoing neighbor-engagement project, see overview), weekly activities about today, and daily design fictions about possible tomorrows.
